Considering Leaving Legacy IBM Platforms? by Thomas Klinect
Even the name "Legacy" gives the perception of old, outdated, and replaceable. This thought process could drive any number of companies to re-think the use of any form of technology that can be branded as "Legacy," especially with the advancements in technology today. In spite of the name, IBM and other vendors are continually integrating new forms of technology into their "Legacy" platforms. New technologies like open-source tools, AI, IoT, among others. Those using these "Legacy" platforms must reassess their desire to leave such technology based on perception and instead understand the true capabilities and quality that their platform has before they spend time and money to remove themselves from it. This article gives practical recommendations on how to assess your current IBM platform by removing your emotions, analyzing existing technologies, and uncovering the total cost of a migration plan.
Bucking the System: Higher Ed, Hold the College by Alex Woodie
For over 15 years Jim Buck taught IBM i and RPG at Gateway Technical College in Wisconsin. His work at Gateway gave students the real-world tools and skills to get established IT jobs with great IBM i companies. He has touched the lives of thousands of people by teaching them a skill that is not only practical but in high demand. But everything has a beginning and an end, and after 15 years the college experience grew old for Jim, and he created imPower Technologies, an online IBM i educational company that continues utilizing the skills that Jim already had in a much different environment... online. Now, after two years of building imPower Technologies, Bill says the most significant challenge was translating what he was teaching from the classroom to the online experience.
Now instead of teaching new students who are coming to his classroom as a requirement for graduation, his students are those seeking to expand their technical knowledge. Many of whom already have established jobs in an IT department.
