IBM i 7.4 Rolled Out, and IBM i 7.3 Tech Refresh Rolled Up by Timothy Prickett Morgan
New releases of the IBM i operating system usually happen every couple of years from IBM, and since it has been a few years since we have seen a new version, no one was surprised when they announced the release of IBM i 7.4. With IBM's new Technology Refresh approach, there hasn't been a huge push to give out new versions at a rapid pace. These Technology Refreshes add support for new hardware and add new software function to the platform, all without breaking release-level compatibility and requiring customers to re-qualify their applications.
Beyond rolling out IBM i 7.4, IBM also released the IBM i 7.3 Technology Refresh 6, which added many of the features of the 7.4 release into the older release that came out in 2016. The only downside to these new releases is that companies running on the older 7.2 version will not be getting a Technology Refresh essentially forcing those in that version or older to move forward onto 7.3 or 7.4. Also, IBM i 7.3 and 7.4 will be getting the refreshes and PTF patches that will be available under extended support for IBM i 6.1 and 7.1 (which stopped receiving normal support in 2015 and 2018 respectively).
