Latest IBM i TRS to Ship Next Month by Alex Woodie
Last week IBM announced that they would be unveiling a pair of out-of-bound technology refreshes (TRS) for the IBM i operating system. IBM i customers have gotten used to TRS unveils on a bi-yearly pattern got a pleasant surprise about this announcement coming next month. The two TRS bring largely the same set of new features. However, those customers who plan to adopt Power9 hardware should be making the move to IBM i 7.3 "fairly quickly," according to IBM i architect Steve Will.
Here is what to expect with the TRS that will be released next month:
DB2 for i
The core database that comes with IBM i is getting multiple enhancements starting with new ILE RPG controls that will give "improved RPG programmer productivity" when using embedded SQL. Along with these enhancements, the TRS brings enhanced built-in functions that will help developers push more business logic into SQL statements.
IBM i Access Client Solutions
Since its release five years ago, the Access Client Solutions (ACS) has grown in popularity as the primary user interface for multiple audiences on the IBM i, this TRS makes it even better. The biggest enhancement to the ACS will reside in the 5250 emulator, it will now support Java Print Service (JPS) for the 5250. This gives a wide range of print-related capabilities to the ACS.
Open Source
The transition to Red Hat Package Manager (RPM) and Yellow Dog Updater Modified (YUM) gives forward-thinking changes to the way that IBM i users consume and use OS software. IBM has already shipped tech previews of RPM and YUM to IBM i systems recently, but with 7.3 TR5 and 7.2 TR9 these technologies will become standard. IBM i users also have access to the latest versions of popular OS languages including Node.js Version 8 and Python Version 3.6.
